Hello, Summer! 5 Tips for the Perfect Family Photos in the Sun
The first day of summer is here, and it’s one of the best times of year to capture relaxed, joyful family photos. With longer days, vibrant scenery, and more flexible schedules, summer is the perfect season to slow down and make some lasting memories in front of the camera.
If you’ve got a session coming up—or you’re thinking about booking one—here are five simple tips to help make your summer photo shoot smooth, fun, and full of beautiful light:
1. Choose the Right Time of Day
In summer, timing is everything! To avoid the harsh overhead sun and the hottest part of the day, we recommend booking your session before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. These windows offer soft, flattering light and help keep everyone more comfortable—especially little ones.
Whether it’s a bright, fresh morning or a glowing late-afternoon shoot, the key is working with natural light before the sun is directly overhead.
2. Dress for the Weather (and the Camera!)
Opt for light, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, and steer toward soft, neutral, or pastel tones that feel airy and summery. Coordinating colors look great in photos—just avoid anything too matchy or anything with large logos or busy graphics.
Most importantly, wear something you feel great in. Confidence always shines through.
3. Stay Cool and Comfortable
Bring along a few hot-weather essentials like water bottles, sunscreen, bug spray, and maybe even a small towel or portable fan. Kids especially benefit from little breaks in the shade or a quick sip of water—keeping everyone cool and happy makes the whole session go more smoothly.
4. Let the Kids Lead (Sometimes!)
Summer sessions often have a laid-back, playful feel, and we encourage families to embrace it. Let the kids explore, laugh, and move—those in-between, candid moments often become the most treasured ones. We’ll guide you through some natural posing and gentle direction, but the magic often happens in the unposed moments.
5. Book in Advance to Get the Best Dates
Summer can fly by with vacations, camps, and other activities, so it’s a great idea to book early to lock in your ideal session date and time. Morning and evening spots tend to go first!
Summer is about sunshine, connection, and a little bit of magic. Let’s capture it together.
