How to Prep Kids for a Photo Session (Without the Meltdowns)
Let’s be honest—photo sessions with kids can feel a little intimidating. Will they listen? Will they smile? Will someone end up in tears? (Possibly you?)
Here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, it can be fun.
We’ve photographed thousands of families and picked up a few tricks to help your session go smoothly, even if your kid is having a "day." Here’s what we recommend:
1. Bring the Essentials
Think of this like a well-packed diaper bag for older kids: it’s not about overpacking, it’s about being ready.
Snacks (non-messy ones like crackers or mini marshmallows)
Wipes (for faces, hands, and surprise dirt situations)
Backup clothes (you never know!)
Comfort item (a favourite stuffy or blanket for reassurance)
2. Set the Stage
A few days before the session, talk to your child about what’s going to happen. Keep it light and positive:
"We’re going to visit a photographer! They’ll take some pictures of us just hanging out."
"You can bring your teddy if you want."
"There might even be time for silly faces."
Letting them know what to expect can help ease nerves and make the experience feel like an adventure, not a surprise.
3. Bribes Are Totally Fine
We’re not above a little motivation. Bring a lollipop for the ride home, promise a trip to the park afterward, or let them know they can watch their favourite show when it’s done. A happy little reward goes a long way.
(Just maybe don’t hand out chocolate five minutes before we start!)
4. Trust Us To Keep It Chill
We don’t expect perfect behaviour. We’ve seen it all: wiggly toddlers, shy preschoolers, kids who need breaks every 5 minutes.
That’s why we keep sessions relaxed and pressure-free. We gently guide, adapt to the energy in the room, and make sure your kids feel safe and seen.
Most importantly, we’re not chasing perfect poses. We’re capturing your kids as they are—which is exactly what you’ll want to remember.
Bottom line? Show up, be yourselves, and let us take care of the rest.
Your job is just to love on your kids. We’ll take care of everything else.
